Today was the first day where I really am making an effort and wanting to try a vegan life. I have eaten vegan foods, in fact, I have made vegan dishes before, so it is not foreign to me. I decided to take this journey with my wife so we can experience this together. I was not fully on board at first. I like cheese! I like eggs! I like chicken and I LOVE bacon! But after thinking about my health and my weight, I know it won't hurt to try. I figured since I cook for my wife, I mind as well make the food for both of us. Here is a video of my feelings right before I left to go to Sprouts:
Thank goodness I had our friends Courtney and Emmerson with me! They showed me a few products and said a few do's and don'ts. It was informative and liberating.
Some of the items I purchased:
Salad items of course (spinach, lettuce, fresh veggies)
Squash (I like to use zucchini noodles instead of regular noodles)
Oranges
Olives from the olive bar
Corn on the cob
Onion
Granola (nut free)
Coconut Milk vanilla yogurt alternative
Vegan meat alternative
Tofu
Soyrizo
Tortillas
Mango ice cream alternative
Garbonzo beans
Vegetarian refried beans
I don't like to waste money, so I will make sure that all of these items will be used one way or another. Once I got home, I was excited to clean out the fridge (giving some products to friends, and some I trashed) of milk and egg based products as well as any other meats. I know that I will not do this perfectly, but I am willing to give it a try.
The hardest part for me so far is the idea that I am putting my soul food traditions aside. I will be making alternative dishes for the holidays, and I don't know how I feel about that yet. Maybe as I continue to learn to cook with a vegan mind it will be easier.
I look forward to sharing my emotions, ideas, and hopefully some gooood recipes with any of my readers. But for now, pray for ya sista....
